做某一事后,一般会预想到一个必然的结果,此句型用于其结果与自己的意愿,预料相反的场合;如例(1)表示自己出于关心对方才讲了一番话,可与预料相反,结果反倒把对方给惹火了,例(4)表示自己预想给对方带去点点心会使对方高兴,可相反会使对方觉得见外,例(5)则表示由于自己说话不注意觉得可能伤害了对方,可相反对方觉得自己说了这话倒使他有了反省的机会;即用于其结果与一般常识性的预想相反的场合;至于只限于当时的一种临时性的预想时,不能使用;
Used when a result is the opposite of one’s intention or expectation. Example (1) means “contrary to expectation, something said out of kindness to another person made him angry,” and (4) means “one would expect that bringing a box of cookies would make someone happy, but instead it would make her feel beholden.” Example (5) means “I thought I hurt the other person because I said such an awful thing, but it was actually a good chance for him to reflect on his conduct.” Indicates an outcome that is contrary to what one might expect in normal circumstances. It is therefore not likely to be used for unpredictable events.
