以XよりもむしろY的形式,表示从某种方面来说Y方程度更高一些。
像例(1)、(2)不单纯是比较,而是含有说话人的价值判断,多表示的是两者从中选一的话,倒是后者更好。这时,后面一般带有…するほうがよい、…したい、Nがいい/よい等表示说话人的喜好或意图的表达方式。
例(3),(4),含有和一般所认为的正好相反、和所期待的相反的意思;可以和かえって、逆に、反対に等互换使用。

As in examples (1) and (2), rather than a simple comparison, this is often used to express the speaker’s value judgment that “if choosing one of two things, when pushed to say, the latter is better.” Expressions which demonstrate the speaker’s taste or inclination, such as ...するほうがよい, ...したい, or Nがいい/よい often come afterwards.
In examples (3) and (4), the implication is “running contrary to general thought” or “running contrary to expectations.” It can be rephrased using かえって, 逆に, 反対に and so on.
