Means that there is no other way. Also used in the forms V-るしかしかたがない and V-るよりしかたがない, as in (3) and (4) respectively. Example (2) means the person is incompetent or troublesome. In spoken language, the form しょうがない is also used.

表示情不自禁地产生某种感情或感觉,连自己都控制不了;一般见于这种感情因无法控制而非常高涨的场合;在…てしかたがない的前面只能使用表示感情,感觉,欲望等的词语,如果使用一些表示属性或评价的词语,句子就会不通;
Expresses an emotion or feeling arising naturally from a source beyond the control of the speaker. Often used to express an irrepressibly strong emotion. Usually preceded by an expression of emotion, feeling, or desire; use of words denoting an attribute or evaluation leads to awkward constructions.
当然,即使不是直接表示感情或感觉,只要是因为该无法控制的事态而导致说话人困惑或焦躁的情形也可以使用;
In addition to directly expressing emotion or feeling, this construction can also be used in cases when a situation lies beyond the control of the speaker and results in problems or annoyance.
也可以省略が说…てしかたない;另外,在较随便的口语中,还可以说…てしようがない;与てならない的区别请参照【てならない】;
At times が is omitted, resulting in the construction ...てしかたない. In casual conversation, the form ...てしょうがない is also used. For the difference in meaning from てならない, refer to that section.
